That is a great question and one that I hear thru-hikers get asked a lot. Everyone has their own reason for hiking the Appalachian Trail. I can only answer it for myself. I am hiking the Appalachian Trail because I love the outdoors, hiking, and for the challenge. Hiking the entire Appalachian Trail has been a goal of mine since I have been 10 years old.
After going on an overnight backpacking trip with my family up Mount Liberty in New Hampshire’s White Mountains I learned about the Appalachian Trail. This fascinated me. A 2170 mile trail from Georgia to Maine. As a 10 year old kid this was the ultimate adventure. Since that first backpacking trip I have done 100’s of miles of hiking and backpacking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Quite a lot of it on the Appalachian Trail.
This year’s mileage is 2185.9 miles. Hopefully in 5-6 months I will be summiting Baxter Peak on Mount Katahdin.
