Got up around 8:00am in Helen, GA. Got breakfast at Helen’s Country Cafe. Which was delicious and pretty cheap. Resupplied and got a hitch back to Unicoi Gap.
When we got to Unicoi Gap it was around 11:30am. It was freezing and there was snow on the ground from the night before. We had a ~700 foot climb out of the gap and then another pretty good climb up to tray mountain. We made very good time and got to the tray mountain shelter around 1:30pm. It was about 6 miles from Unicoi Gap to the shelter.
We decided to camp at Sassafras Gap. This was another 5 miles from the shelter on Tray Mountain. We had a lot of ups and downs and missed Sassafras Gap and ended up staying at Addis Gap. Oh well more mileage isn’t too bad.
Me and Nick ate and set up camp. We got into our tents around 7:30pm because it was so cold. It must have gotten down to single digits. My sleeping bag held out well though and I was warm most of the night. I had to cover Gus up in my synthetic down jacket to keep him from shivering. It worked out well and he was warm the rest of the night.
Overall a pretty good day. Mountains were really pretty with all the snow. I will be glad when it is warmer and I won’t have to worry about freezing at night. But so far so good. More updates to come.
