Day 2

Posted by on March 17, 2013

Hey everyone. Got up around 8:00am this morning at Stover Creek Shelter. Ate breakfast and packed up all my gear and left around 9:30am. Was hiking with one of the same guys from yesterday. We left each others company after eating lunch at Hawk Mountain shelter after hiking 6 miles.

It was a beautiful day and I was feeling good until I started climbing up Sassafras Mountain. Gus was doing great but I hit a wall. My knees started to hurt while descending the mountain. Gus pulls a lot going downhill so I think this may be part of the problem. I also lost my second 1L Smart Water bottle and had to climb the next 2.5 miles without any water. Kind of made me a little nervous since the sun was high in the sky and there are no leaves on the trees. It got hot.

Once I filled up with water it was only another .9 miles to Gooch Mountain Shelter. This is where I am staying the night. It was a good day but a little painful. Having a hard time walking around. I will see how it feels in the morning. Overall it was 13 miles, which doesn’t seem too bad, but it kicked my butt today. Glad I have a short day if only 9 miles tomorrow.

FYI: I am having a hard time adding photos to these blog posts because when I write them I have no cell reception. I will upload the pics I have when I get to Neels Gap on Monday.
