Day 37, April 20th

Completed my longest day today. 25 miles in 10 hours. Feeling much better today. Glad that hell is over.

Me, Solo, Mellow Jonny, and Wiki got picked up at the Worst Southern Motel by Miss Janet at 9:30am. She took us back to Sam’s Gap to resume our hike. We didn’t get there and start our hike until 1:00pm. Miss Janet is a busy lady. She shuttles so many hikers it takes awhile for everything to work out.

Solo was intent on making the 25 mile trip back to Erwin, TN to meet up with Monk and Coach. I decided to join to make up some time from my unplanned sickness zero day.

We made it to Big Bald with incredible views in really good time and figured we could make the 25 mile trip. It was really windy up there so we had a quick snack and got out of there and back in the trees.

I enjoyed the long day up to about 4 miles left. We were night hiking and able to see the lights of Erwin. Switchback after switchback seemed to not get us any closer. I was fed up and ready to be done. It finally ended and me and Solo popped out onto a road next to Uncle Johnny’s Hostel where Monk and Coach had rented a cabin.

Once we reached the cabin it was full of thru-hikers. Some I had not let before. They were watching Braveheart. I grabbed a spot on the floor and enjoyed a nice cold beer. After the movie we went to sleep. I was beat and my feet were sore.

We will see what shape I am in the morning. Goodnight!

Day 35, April 18th

Woke up at 3:00am in the morning and didn’t feel very well. Upset stomach. Tossed and turned for about an hour. Finally got out of my tent and threw up. Right then I knew I got the norovirus that has been going around. Felt better after that and was able to sleep until around 7:30am.

Got my stuff together and got ready to leave with Mellow Jonny. He gave me an Ermergen-C drink mix and said it may make me feel better. I finished it and threw up again. So much for that.

We left Hogback Ridge Shelter around 10:00am. I decide to get off the trail at Sam’s Gap. Another 2.4 miles down the trail. It was horrible with the way I was feeling.

Got there about and hour later and another hiker was there that was sick also. He had already called Miss Janet for a shuttle and she was on her way. Mellow Jonny started to feel sick to and decided to join us.

Another hiker from the Goat Herd, Han Solo, also met us at Sam’s Gap not feeling well either. His story was hilarious and disgusting and not something I will share in this post.

We finally made it to the Best Southern Motel in Erwin, TN. Miss Janet bought us Gatorade, Apple Sauce, Yogurt, and Bananas. Awesome lady. Thank You!

Me, Solo, and Gus shared a room and slept the rest of the day. Hopefully tomorrow we will be feeling better.

Day 38, April 21st

Short day today. Only about 8-9 miles. Needed after yesterday’s long haul.

Woke up at the cabin around 8:00am. Took a hot shower and got ready for the day.

Weighed my pack with 4 days if food for me and Gus and it came to 28.7 lbs. pretty damn good. I was the lightest of the 4 I am hiking with. 🙂

Got on the trail around 10:30-11:00am. Once we started hiking my right knee was bothering me and I took it slow. I guess that’s what happens the day after a longer hike. Hopefully it feels better tomorrow.

Made it to Curley Maple Gap Shelter around 1:00pm. Are lunch and lounged around in the sun for 2 hours. Awesome break.

Left there around 3:00pm and we all decided to hike another 4.1 miles to Indian Grave Gap to spend the night.

Nice easy day. Little colder tonight. Supposed to be in the 30s. We all got in our tents around 7:00pm. I’m glad to be warm and out of the wind.

Day 34, April 17th

Had thunderstorms last night and found two ticks crawling on me. I didn’t sleep well. Woke up to rain and decided to hangout in the tent until it stopped.

Started packing up camp around 10:00am and on the trail with Mellow Jonny at 11:00am. It started raining again 30 minutes after we left. Our plan to wait out the rain failed.

We made it 5 miles to Flint Mountain Shelter and took a break. We had some luck and our lunch coincided with a pretty good downpour. We stayed dry and when we finished lunch the sun was shining.

The forest changes when the sun comes out after a rain. It was a beautiful sight to see. Just another reason why being out here is so great.

We had a 1600 foot climb up to a view that was pretty nice other than being able to see the highway. Think it was the Blue Ridge Parkway. Another climb and me and Gus made it to Hogback Ridge Shelter. Tough day.

The Goat Herd is not here. They are probably another 4 miles ahead. I will try to catch them tomorrow. They were smart and left early in the morning instead if waiting out the rain.

The weather tomorrow is supposed to be hot. I have heard 80 degrees. Hopefully there will be wind. Because that is too hot for me right now.

Another 15 mile day. 26.5 miles until Erwin, TN and a food resupply. It’s about 8:20pm right now and me and Gus are in our tent ready for bed. Talk with you all later.

Day 33, April 16th

Peanut woke everyone up at 6:00am. It was really humid out but a cool morning. We got on the trail at 7:00am. Half of the Goat Herd stayed at Deep Gap and half stayed somewhere further. We caught up with them about 2 miles down the trail about to break camp.

I ran out of water around 5 miles before the next water source. It was hot and I didn’t plan very well. Hopefully a learning experience.

We had some really cool views today. One from Blackstack Cliffs and the other from Big Firescald Knob. Actually had an exposed ridge walk on that one.

I leaned today the Gus is an awesome rock climber. We had an 8 foot drop to go check out Blackstack Cliff and he just did it. On the way back he just jumped right up without hesitation. I was very proud of my little buddy and even more impressed.

The Goat Herd and I are camping at Bald Ridge tonight. Pretty cool spot. It’s exactly like it sounds. A big field on a ridge. Gus chased some sticks and had the whole group watching some of the Goat Herd play frisbee. He was chasing it around at full speed trying to catch it. Pretty good stuff.

Anyways, I’m getting tired and I have to check for ticks before bed. I will update again soon.

Update: Went over 300 miles today. Now camped at mile 301.1.

Day 32, April 15th

Woke up around 7:45am this morning at the cabin. That was trying to sleep in. Having a hard time sleeping past 7:00am even on my days off. Not like me.

Headed to the store/diner around 8:15am and had an awesome bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. Man I love food. 🙂

Had to get to the post office at 9:00am to send some stuff back home. Went with another hiker named Monk. We were in and out of there in about 20 minutes. We also stopped by the outfitter to weigh Monk’s new pack. It came it at 43.8lbs. Way better than before. Still glad I am not carrying that much weight.

Headed back out on the trail around 11:00am. Pretty hot so the climbs right out of town were rough. I could tell right away I wasn’t feeling it today. Just felt like I was dragging an anchor behind me. Must be the zero day and all the food, soda, and beer I enjoyed.

Only planned on doing 11 miles today but ended up doing around 13. We are at Deep Gap tonight. Everyone is avoiding the shelters because there is some sort of stomach bug going around. I have heard that it is norovirus.

Oh, me and Gus both climbed a really awesome fire tower today. Great views. Had my picture taken at the too and took some pics of Gus taking a break up there.

Talk with you all later. I’m beat. Hopefully be in better shape tomorrow. Camping at Deep Gap tonight.

Day 29, April 12th

Thunderstorm last night wasn’t as bad as we were expecting. Hard to get accurate weather reports when you are not in the woods. You can imagine the difficulty we have here. 🙂

Got up and moving around 9:30am because we waited out the rain. We heard the sun would be out by around 10:00am. We were hoping to get really good views from Max Patch. But when we got there it was shrouded in clouds and pretty strong winds. It was pretty awesome nonetheless. Max Patch is a mountain that is covered in grass. Supposedly there are beautiful 360 degree views. I will have to visit again to find out.

We ended up doing about 17-18 miles today. Not sure because we are camped at an unnamed gap/old roadbed. Not in the guide so far as I can tell. Hot Springs, NC in the morning for a much needed rest and zero day.
